Siramesine hydrochloride is a high affinity σ receptor agonist (K_i values are 0.19 and 17 nM for σ₂ and σ₁ receptors, respectively). Displays anxiolytic and antidepressant effects in rodents. Also induces cell death in tumor cell lines.
