Phosphatases

Phosphatases catalyze dephosphorylation. They are hydrolase enzymes that replace a phosphate group on the substrate with a hydroxyl group from water. The action of phosphatases are in direct opposition to those of kinases and phosphorylases. Dephosphorylation can activate or deactivate the substrate and enable or disable protein-protein interactions, thus they have an integral role in signal transduction pathways.
